36-year old Mahmud Adam has lost his left arm and the toes of his right leg after he was attacked by an assailant with a machete in a nearby bush close to the dam site at Ashaiman Lebanon.

He was attacked last Monday on his way to defecate in the bush around 10:00pm when the area was engulfed in total darkness due to load shedding.

He told Adom News that before the incident occurred, he was in the company of two other residents; they had just purchased a soft drink and bread.

“I told them I would eat mine after emptying my bowel whilst we were seated. We then saw Police patrol vehicle approaching. The other two immediately took to their heels” he said.

Mahmud then decided to proceed to the bushy area where he normally defecates as the Police vehicle passed him by.

According to him, he heard someone instructing him not to move else he would be shot.

“I took it lightly because I knew the Police do not shoot until the situation demands. The next thing I saw was a man with a machete. I decided to run but got trapped in the mud,” Mahmud revealed.

The unknown assailant attacked him with the machete until he fell unconscious.

“Since I wasn’t wielding any weapon, I decided to protect myself with my hands but the left arm which was deeply wounded was falling off after the third cut,” he said.

Mahmud believes the assailant intended killing him.

“He continued as I fell into the mud. I was very weak and tried using my leg but that also did not help,” he indicated.

The helpless Mahmud lay in the mud battling with frogs and mosquitoes till the following morning when a resident using the route found him and informed his brother Muhammed Zachariah.

Muhammed Zachariah rushed to the dam site and found his brother in the mud and with the assistance of other residents, rushed him to Tema General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Manager of the Accident Centre at Tema General Hospital, Ernest Awinimi says the hospital has provided emergency care and referred mahmud to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

“It wasn’t possible saving the severed arm; we prepared him for theatre where traumatic amputation was done. He has been referred to Korle Bu for further treatment."

Ashaiman District Police Commander, DSP Seth Tay says a suspect is currently in custody and will soon be arraigned before court.

Mahmud Adam who hails from Kenkεnso deals in electronics and has two children in his hometown.
