England's journey to the World Cup has finally begun after the players took off in Birmingham on a flight bound for the Russian capital St Petersburg.

Harry Kane was pictured leading the team up the steps and onto their Boeing 757-23N for the five-hour flight to Russia, where they will then go through their final preparations before the big kick-off next Monday.

The players had ditched their sharp suits and instead opted for tracksuits for the journey, and everyone appeared in very high spirits as they left British shores ahead of the tournament.

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, club team-mates at Manchester United, were paired up for the flight, while it was a similar situation for Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds pair set the tone for the flight early, with Henderson immediately joking that Alexander-Arnold 'better have some banter this flight'. His team-mate immediately replied with an Instagram post of his own, outing Henderson as the team's table tennis champion.

Elsewhere on the plane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli were partnered together, with newbie Ruben Loftus-Cheek just across the aisle from them.

As they stepped onto the plane, Tottenham's Eric Dier and Danny Rose were arm-in-arm, preparing themselves for the five-hour journey to Russia.

ENGLAND WORLD CUP GROUP G FIXTURES

June 18, 7pm vs Tunisia, Volgograd Arena

June 24, 1pm vs Panama, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

June 28, 7pm vs Belgium, Kaliningrad Stadium

Southgate's side are understood to have stayed at St George's Park on Monday night, before beginning their trip to the tournament on Tuesday morning.

Gareth Southgate's side will arrive at their Repino base later on Tuesday, before then flying on to Volgograd on Sunday ahead of the opening game.

England start their Group G campaign against Tunisia on Monday, June 18, before facing Panama and Belgium for a place in the knockout stages.

Southgate's youthful and inexperienced squad are as much as 20/1 to triumph in next month's Moscow final.

But Kane and Co looked in good spirits as they headed off for another major tournament, albeit without the weight of expectation that has greeted many of their predecessors.

Before leaving Russia, England posed for a group photograph in their official World Cup suits. On Monday they also enjoyed a final training session on these shores, when they held a behind-closed-doors match involving every member of the squad.

All 23 players, as well as stand-by midfielder Jake Livermore, took part in a game on the Sir Bobby Charlton Pitch, where referee Anthony Taylor oversaw proceedings.

Players switched between the teams that wore England's white and black training tops, allowing Southgate to look at different combinations as all the squad members received some involvement.

When they touch down in Russia later on Tuesday, Southgate's squad could face a dramatic rise in temperature when they swap their Repino training base for Volgograd for their opening game.

England's base, which is situated close to the Finnish border, is expected to be as chilly as 15°C for their first training session on Wednesday.

But they then travel more than 1,000 miles south to Volgograd for their first group game against Tunisia on Monday, with the mercury expected to rise as high as 33°C there by the end of this week.
