From Royal Ascot to Wimbledon and Henley to Glyndebourne, summer can be a busy time for socialites looking to mingle their way through 'The Season'.

But between dress codes and the unpredictable British weather it can be difficult to strike the right tone when it comes to the style stakes.

Fortunately society bible Tatler has released a guide on on how to dress to impress for any occasion, whether it be the polo or a royal garden party.

Designers including Erdem and Carolina Herrera are definitely having a moment but trends such as heirloom earrings and Peter Pan collars are best avoided.

Many of the fashion hits - and the misses - have been spotted on royals over the years, most notably the Duchess of Cambridge, 36.

So scroll down to learn more before you restock your summer wardrobe...

SUMMER STYLE HITS...

Tea dresses

The tea dress is certainly having a moment this summer and provides a perfect option for women looking to show off their style credential while remaining demure.

As Tatler states: 'The return of the tea dress is brilliantly in tune, and coquettishly svelte to wear.'

Kate Middleton has been spotted in these feminine styles on a number of occasions, including this beautiful Chanel number during an appearance at Kensington Palace last year.

Such styles are also available at a range of price points - making them a suitable choice no matter what your budget.

Erdem

Erdem is now a favourite of the red carpet (once dominated only by French designers) and has dressed stars including Lily James, Jessica Chastain and Gillian Anderson.

In just over a decade, he’s conquered high society dressing. The royals are particular fans, as is former Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet and Samantha Cameron.

The Duchess of Cambridge likes the brand so much she packed two in her suitcase for the royal visit to Sweden earlier this year.

Tatler explains it would be a perfect choice for anyone looking for a high-end summer look, with It girl Sabine Getty describing it as a 'dream'.

The 'irresistible' designs of Carolina Herrera - most recently seen on the Duchess of Sussex, 36, at Trooping the Colour on Saturday - are also highlighted.

When it comes to hats, seek out Stephen Jones, Noel Stewart or Philip Treacy.

Sugared-almond shades

Pastel pink, sunshine yellow and mint green are all big style hitters this summer and make the perfect alternative to the floral frocks dominating shop rails.

Kate has been spotted in several of the shades, including a beautiful pink creation for Trooping the Colour last year.

However Tatler urges women not to go overboard, urging them to 'wear sugared-almond shades in moderation' in order to 'stay on the right side of saccharine'.

... AND THE MISSES

Peter Pan collars

The Duchess of Cambridge looked radiant as she stepped out from the Lindo Wing in a red Jenny Packham dress with a Peter Pan collar, but similar looks are best avoided at summer soirees, according to Tatler.

As it explains: 'While pretty is the word for summer, when it comes to your clothes there’s a world of difference between being on point and Bonpoint.'

Heirloom earrings

Many women treasure the jewellery that has been passed down to them through generations.

Among them is Kate Middleton, who is the proud owner of a number of royal pieces, including ones once owned by Princess Diana.

However swapping out such pieces for a 'a bright young thing is a way to embolden an outfit', Tatler writes.
