Richard Bacon has shared a photograph from his hospital bed after being diagnosed with 'pneumonia across both lungs'.

The former Blue Peter presenter, 42, was seen with nine wires strapped to his chest as he lay in bed at Lewisham Hospital in south-east London in the snap posted to his Instagram account over the weekend.

The TV personality confessed he thought the lung disorder was something people contracted in their 80s.

Richard informed his fans: 'Looks like l've got pneumonia. Although I thought that was for people in their 80s.'

The Sun reported that the television personality was suffering with pneumonia across 'two lungs'.

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung and symptoms include: dry coughs, chest pain, fever and trouble breathing.

The radio personality tried to make light when he joked he was glad he got ill in the UK where there is a good NHS.

WHAT IS PNEUMONIA?

Pneumonia is a type of chest infection that affects the tiny air sacs in the lungs.

The condition causes these sacs to be become inflammed and fill with fluid, making it harder to breathe.

Pneumonia is caused by bacteria or viruses, with the most common being Streptococcus pneumoniae.

It affects between five and 11 out of every 1,000 adults every year in the UK.

Anyone can suffer from pneumonia, however, at-risk groups include:

  • Babies and young children
  • People over 65
  • Those with long-term heart, lung or kidney disease
  • People with cancer, particularly those having chemotherapy
  • Smokers
  • Those on drugs that suppress their immune systems

Antibiotics or mechanical ventilator use in hospitals also raise the risk.

Symptoms include

  • Coughing up mucus
  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue

In severe cases, sufferers may cough up blood, vomit or have a rapid heart rate.

Treatment is usually antibiotics, which may need to be given intravenously in hospital in severe cases.

He wrote on Twitter: 'Thank God I got ill in Britain (actually on the way to Britain, was taken off the plane in a wheelchair).

'F**k all the ideology driven politicians who’ve messed up America’s healthcare system. Viva the NHS. Happy 70th.'

He also joked on Instagram: 'It’s the NHS’s 70th birthday today. I hate to miss a party.'

MailOnline has approached Richard Bacon's representatives for further comment.

The Los Angeles-based star credited formerly TOWIE star and now Extra presenter Mark Wright's personal training routine for his great shirtless physique.

He told fans: 'Haha. Mark Wright’s personal training.' (sic)

Elsewhere, he discussed how discovering he had ADHD gave him understanding about why he took drugs as a Blue Peter presenter nearly 20 years ago.

In April, the TV host revealed his diagnosis helped him reflect on the difficult period where he was sacked from the children's TV show after admitting to using cocaine.

He reflected on This Morning: 'What’s interesting about that incident – that is almost 20 years ago now – is that it does follow you around.

'But I work in America now... when I’m interviewed for jobs, I bring it up straight away because I know they are going to see it on google.

'But it such a distant event, it doesn’t really seem to matter anymore.

'But the ADHD diagnosis made me understand that chapter of my life a bit more.

'It’s too simplistic to say that having ADHD makes you take drink or makes you take drugs as a young man… there is an element you're reaching for stimulants because you're looking to mimic that blood flow.'
